US Denounces Drone Strike on UN Peacekeepers in Sudan

(MENAFN) The United States on Sunday strongly denounced a drone strike targeting a UN base in Sudan that resulted in the deaths of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and left eight others wounded, calling the incident "in the strongest terms."

The assault, which took place on Saturday at the UN facility in Kadugli, Sudan, was described as an "egregious disregard for international efforts to protect peace and security," according to Massad Boulos, US senior adviser for Arab and African Affairs, who shared the statement on US social media platform X.

Boulos emphasized that the warring factions "must not target UN personnel" and insisted they should "cease hostilities without preconditions" while ensuring "unhindered humanitarian access."

The strike occurred amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Since April 2023, the conflict has claimed thousands of lives, displaced millions, and triggered one of the globe's most severe humanitarian emergencies.

While the Sudanese military attributed the attack to the RSF, the rebel group has yet to provide a response.

The fallen peacekeepers were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), stationed in the contested oil-rich border area administered by Sudan and the neighboring country of South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011. Both nations have long claimed the territory and have a history of conflict over it.
