US Condemns Drone Strike on UN Base in Sudan
The assault, which occurred on Saturday at the UN facility in Kadugli, Sudan, was described by Massad Boulos, US senior adviser for Arab and African Affairs, on the social media platform X as an "egregious disregard for international efforts to protect peace and security."
Boulos called on the conflicting factions, stating that they "must not target UN personnel" and urging them to "cease hostilities without preconditions," while also ensuring "unhindered humanitarian access."
The incident unfolded amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence, which has persisted since April 2023, has claimed thousands of lives, displaced millions, and triggered one of the globe's most severe humanitarian crises.
While the Sudanese military accused the RSF of carrying out the attack, the rebel faction had not issued any immediate response.
The victims were part of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), stationed in the disputed, oil-abundant border region managed jointly by Sudan and South Sudan—the latter having gained independence in 2011. Both nations continue to contest the area and have been involved in prolonged conflicts over it.
The mandate for the UNISFA mission had been renewed just last month, reaffirming the UN’s ongoing commitment to maintaining stability in the volatile region.
