Russia to Establish First Embassy in the Comoros

(MENAFN) Moscow is set to inaugurate its inaugural embassy in Moroni, the capital of the Comoros, before the conclusion of the year, following a Russian government directive issued on Saturday.

The Comorian authorities had previously expressed their willingness to support this initiative.

In March, the Comoros government formally communicated its endorsement by sending an official note to the Russian embassy in Madagascar, confirming its readiness to host a Russian mission in Moroni.

“The proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry, agreed upon with the relevant federal executive authorities and the Comorian side, to establish in 2025 a Russian Federation embassy in the Union of the Comoros (Moroni), is hereby approved,” the official document states.

Diplomatic ties between Russia and the Comoros date back to 1976; however, Moscow has never maintained a permanent embassy on the islands. Since Soviet times, Russia’s ambassador to the Comoros has operated out of the embassy in Madagascar, managing bilateral relations from there for decades. The Comoros currently does not have an embassy in Moscow.

This move is part of Moscow’s broader strategy to expand its diplomatic presence across Africa.

During talks at the Kremlin in November with Faure Gnassingbe, first president of Togo’s Council of Ministers, President Vladimir Putin noted that Russia and Togo had agreed to reopen their embassies in 2026.

Togo had closed its embassy in Moscow in 1999, while Russia had shut its mission in 1992.

In recent years, Russia has already reopened embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea in 2024, with plans to establish missions in South Sudan, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone soon.

Liberia and the Gambia are also among the next countries targeted for diplomatic expansion by Moscow.
